Court of Honor, August 31, 2010


Dear Troop 68 families,

 

Tomorrow night is the summer Court of Honor where we will be recognizing the scouts’ accomplishments over the past four month.  The COH will take place at the Woodland Presbyterian Church which is located near the intersection of Gibson and CR 98.  The ceremony will start at 7:00 sharp and we are asking scouts to arrive at 6:45 for set-up.  Each scout should bring the following:

 

- Full uniform including merit badge and OA sashes

- Entire family

- One dozen cookies to share

- Items for care package to be sent to troops in Afghanistan (optional)

 

We will also be distributing the new Troop 68 neckerchief slides for those families that have paid.  Slides are $5 each.  Troop 68 neckerchiefs can be purchased for $7.

 

Upcoming events:

We have several upcoming events.  I have attached  a sign-up sheet for your convenience to help plan  out Sept-November.

 

Popcorn sales:

Thank you to Carrie Ruport and the families that participated in the show and sale portion of popcorn sales,  Over $500 was raised from popcorn sales and another $330 in donations for the troops.  Order sales will be starting soon.

Popcorn Sales

Popcorn Show and Sell will be held this weekend.  This is a prelude to our individual sales and a large portion of the proceeds benefit the troop.  Thank you to all of the families that have signed up to date.

 

New neckerchief Slides:

Thank you to the Schaupp family for securing new specialized neckerchief slides for Troop 68.   The cost for a new slide is $5.  A neckerchief/slide combination can be purchased for $12.  We will begin taking orders and payments tonight and will be handing out the new slides at next week’s Court of Honor.

 

Court of Honor

The summer Court of Honor will take place on August 31 at Woodland Presbyterian Church (1324 Columbia Dr). Parker R will be planning the ceremony and serving as MC.  All family members are encouraged to attend to help recognize the scouts as they receive their awards and advancements.  We are asking each family to bring one dozen cookies/brownies etc to share.

 

Military Care Package

There are family members of Troop 68 Scouts currently serving in the military.  The Villarreal Family is spearheading a project to send a care package to service men and women currently serving in Afghanistan.  We will creating a large card for all scouts to sign and sending a care package with backed goods (we will work on ways to keep it fresh), portable board games, playing cards and other items.  We will also be including aa op 68 neckerchief and slide in the package.  If your family can assist purchasing small items to put in the care pack, please bring them either tonight or to the Court of Honor next Tuesday.

 

Backpacking Trip

September 25-26 the troop will be backpacking into Loch Leaven Lakes near Yuba Gap.  This 5.6 mile hike (to the lower lake, 8 miles to the upper lakes) provides great scenery and excellent trout fishing.  More details in the coming weeks.

 

Fall Camporee

The Yolo District will be holding a fall Camporee on October 15-17 on Cache Creek near Brooks.  More information to follow but please mark your calendars.  We will be inviting local Webelos Dens to join us on the overnight portion of the Camporee.

 

 

Adult Leader Training - Woodbadge

Wood Badge is a leadership course that completes Scouting’s Basic Leadership Training program for all levels of Scouting (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Venturing.) Wood Badge for the 21st Century is a two weekend training.  Full time participation in both weekends is required to be certified.

1st session on September 23-25, 2010.

2nd Session on October 7-9, 2010.

Each session begins on Thursday (approx. 7:00 am) and ends on Saturday Afternoon (approx. 6:00 pm). Breakfast on Thursday not provided. Please eat breakfast before arriving. Wednesday over-night accommodations can be made by advance notice

 

Scout Day at the Oakland Raiders

Cabin Clean-up 6:00 PM

August is Troop 68’s month to
maintain the cabin and make any needed repairs.
Mr. Sandovol and Mr. Russell will be at the cabin at 6:00 p.m. TONIGHT
to lead this effort.  Parents and
siblings are invited to assist as well.
In addition to sweeping and mopping the main floor, we will be cleaning
out the breakout rooms, Troop 68 closet, chair and table storage room and
kitchen.  There is also some weeding to
do outside, cobwebs to be cleaned from all windows and the front porch gutter
to clean.  Please bring any additional
garden tools, brooms and mops with you this evening.  Trevor E. has already mowed and edged the
front lawn for us this week.  Scouts can wear their activity shirts for
the initial clean-up and then change into their field uniform for the rest of
the meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m.

 

Yolo County Fair Parking

Post 77 has asked for
assistance with parking on Saturday, August 21 at the Yolo County Fair.  Please respond to Mr. Engel if you are
available for a four hour shift (12-4 or 2-6) and are at least 13 years old,
please respond to Mr. Engel at rctjengel4@yahoo.com.  Currently we only have two scouts signed
up.  Please respond if you are available
to help with either, or both shifts.  These
hours count as community service.

Post 77 has asked for assistance with parking on Saturday, August 21 at the Yolo County Fair.  Please respond to Mr. Engel if you are available for a four hour shift (12-4 or 2-6) and are at least 13 years old, please respond to Mr. Engel at rctjengel4@yahoo.com.  These hours count as community service.

Upcoming Events -  There are several events coming up in January that will require fees, including summer camp deposit, Klondike Derby and the snow day.  I will be mailing out forms in advance to help facilitate the process but wanted to provide a heads up.

 

Summer Camp – Troop 68 will attend summer camp at Camp Kern July 11-17, 2010.  Camp Kern is located on beautiful Huntington Lake just east of Fresno.  Our first deposit of $50.00 for summer camp will be due in January!

 

Snow Day – Troop 68 will be taking a day trip to the Yuba Gap Snow Park on Saturday, January 9th.  We will leave the Scout Cabin at 9:00 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m.  In addition to a fun day in the snow, the Scouts will be practicing their skills for the Klondike Derby and refining their cold weather camping abilities.  The cost is $5 which will include lunch.  Additional adults are invited to participate.

 

Klondike Derby – The Yolo District will be hosting the Klondike Derby January 29-31 in Tahoe City.  In addition to developing cold weather camping skills, the Scouts will participate in competitive events testing their pioneering, first aid, personal fitness, fire building and survival skills.  The cost is $20 per Scout which includes meals.

 

Trailblazer District Merit Badge Trail Drive – The dates for this event will be February 27th, March 6th and March 20th.  If you plan on attending you must attend all 3 days!  More information will be announced when it becomes available.

 

NYLT – National Youth Leadership Training will be held May 14-16 and May 21-23 at Camp Pollock.  If you are First Class or above and 13 years of age or older then you should seriously think about attending this incredible leadership course.  Registration will be available after December 1st.  If you are interested in attending please talk to the Scoutmaster.

Merit Badge SaturdayMeet at the Scout Cabin at 7:45 a.m. with your permission slip, merit badge book, blue card and a notebook.  Field uniforms are required.  We will depart at 8:00 sharp for Winters and return by 5:00 p.m.  Be sure to  complete any pre-requisites this week.


Klondike Derby – Troop meetings for December and January will be spent working on scout skills required for the Klondike Derby.  Parents are invited to assist patrols as the patrol leaders work on knots, fire starting, first aid and lashings.

 

Summer Camp – Troop 68 will attend summer camp at Camp Kern July 11-17, 2010.  Camp Kern is located on beautiful Huntington Lake just east of Fresno.  Our first deposit of $50.00 for summer camp will be due in January!

Veteran’s Day Flags – Scouts will be needed to assist with putting up flags at the Woodland Cemetery on Tuesday, November 11th.   We have also been asked to help with the ceremony at the Woodland Court House that morning.  Scouts should plan on being at the Woodland cematery on West Street/Cross Street by 7:30am in full field uniform.  Afterwards we will set up chairs at the courthouse.  The ceremony will start at approx. 11am.  That afternoon flags will be taken down at the cemetery at 4pm.
